Replace the water pump: 1993 Mustang 5.0 (incl. Cobra)

Video, numbered steps, tools and parts, mistakes to avoid, and a done check.

For the 1993 Ford Mustang 5.0L HO, including the Cobra.

Work safely, check your manual. This guide is a helper, not a replacement for your factory service manual. Work on a cool engine, parked on level ground with the parking brake on. Wear eye protection and gloves. If a step doesn't match your car, stop and check the manual or ask a shop.

Specs for this job

Step by step

  1. Let the engine cool and disconnect the battery.

Never open the cooling system hot. Disconnect the negative battery cable before you work near the fan and belt.

  2. Drain the cooling system.

Open the radiator drain into the pan. Catch all of it: coolant is poisonous to people and pets.

  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.

Just break them loose. Don't remove them yet.

Do this before that: Do this before you take the belt off. The belt holds the pulley still while you loosen the bolts.

  4. Photo the belt routing, then take the belt off.

Find the belt routing decal and take a picture of how your belt runs. Then use the breaker bar to move the tensioner and slip the belt off.

Do this before that: Photo first, belt second. Routing changes with A/C, power steering, and smog pump.

  5. Remove the fan shroud and fan.

Unbolt the shroud and slide it back over the fan. Unbolt the fan (and spacer, if fitted) from the pump, then lift the fan and shroud out together.

  6. Remove the pulley and any brackets on the pump.

Take off the water pump pulley and any accessory brackets bolted to the pump.

  7. Disconnect the hoses from the pump.

Lower radiator hose, heater hose, and bypass hose.

  8. Unbolt the pump. Keep the bolts in order.

Lay the bolts out on cardboard in the same pattern as the pump. They are different lengths.

Do this before that: A long bolt in a short hole can bottom out and crack the aluminum front cover.

  9. Clean the gasket surfaces.

Use a plastic scraper. Don't gouge the aluminum, and keep old gasket bits out of the coolant passages.

  10. Check the new pump.

It must be the reverse-rotation pump for your serpentine-belt 5.0. Compare it to the old one: same shape, same bolt holes.

Do this before that: Check this before you open the gaskets, so you can still return it.

  11. Install the new pump with new gaskets.

Start every bolt by hand in its own hole, then tighten evenly in a cross pattern to the factory torque. Check your factory service manual or the underhood emissions (VECI) label for the exact spec.

  12. Reconnect the hoses, brackets, and pulley.

Hoses on and clamped. Brackets back on. Pulley on with its bolts snug, not tight yet.

  13. Put the shroud in place, then the fan.

Set the shroud back over the fan area first, then bolt the fan (and spacer) on.

Do this before that: Shroud before fan. It will not fit past the fan once the fan is bolted on.

  14. Install the belt, then tighten the pulley bolts.

Route the belt to match your photo and the decal. With the belt on, tighten the pulley and fan bolts. Bolt the shroud down.

Do this before that: Water pump first, then the new belt. If you are replacing the belt too, now is the time.

  15. Check the belt tensioner marks.

The tensioner arm should sit between its two index marks. If not, see the serpentine belt guide.

  16. Refill and bleed the cooling system.

Fill with the coolant type above (50% mix). Bleed the air out as your manual shows.

  17. Reconnect the battery and start it.

Let it warm up. Watch for leaks and keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Top off when it is cool again.
