Work safely, check your manual. This guide is a helper, not a replacement for your factory service manual. Work on a cool engine, parked on level ground with the parking brake on. Wear eye protection and gloves. If a step doesn't match your car, stop and check the manual or ask a shop.
How-to video
The video loads from YouTube (privacy-enhanced mode) only when you tap play. These videos are made by their channels, not by us. Some videos set a different number than the factory spec. This page uses the factory spec: 10° BTDC with the SPOUT out, or what your VECI label says.
Fox-body 5.0 video, made for 1986-93 cars; the car's year is not stated.
Watch on YouTubeVideo is from a 1988 model: same part and steps as the 1993. (fitment source)
Watch on YouTubeHow we match videos: we only call a video from another year a match when a parts catalog lists the same part number for both years. If a video doesn't say its year, we say so.

Specs for this job
- Base timing: 10° BTDC, with the SPOUT connector out (source)
- Setup: Neutral (manual) or Park (automatic), A/C and heater off, inductive timing light, engine at operating temperature (source)
- Timing rpm: Check your factory service manual or the underhood emissions (VECI) label for the exact spec.
- Distributor hold-down bolt torque: Check your factory service manual or the underhood emissions (VECI) label for the exact spec.
- If your VECI label lists a different timing number, follow the label for your car.
Step by step
Park it safely.
Level ground, parking brake on. Manual in Neutral, automatic in Park. A/C and heater off.
Find and mark the timing marks.
Clean the marks on the crank pulley (balancer) and the pointer. Paint or chalk the 10° BTDC line so it is easy to see.
Do this before that: Mark it with the engine off. Make sure you mark BTDC (before top dead center), not ATDC.
Hook up the timing light.
Clamp the inductive pickup on the number 1 spark plug wire. Route the cords well away from the fan and belt.
Unplug the SPOUT connector.
It is near the distributor. Pull the single-wire in-line connector, or the shorting bar from the two-wire connector. Put it in your pocket.
Do this before that: SPOUT out before you check or set base timing. Otherwise the computer is moving the timing.
Start it with the key and warm it up.
Use the ignition key only, not a remote starter. Let it reach full operating temperature.
Read the timing.
Aim the light at the pointer. See which mark lines up.
Adjust if needed.
Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt just enough to turn the distributor by hand. Turn it slowly until the 10° BTDC mark lines up with the pointer (or your VECI label's number).
Do this before that: Keep hands, hair, and the light cord clear of the fan and belt.
Tighten the hold-down bolt and recheck.
Tighten it, then check the timing again. It can move when you tighten. Check your factory service manual or the underhood emissions (VECI) label for the exact spec.
Plug the SPOUT back in.
Then check with the light that the timing now advances past the base setting. That means the computer has control again.
Do this before that: SPOUT back in before you drive. Left out, the car runs poorly and can set code 18.
Remove the light and test drive.
Check that it starts, idles, and pulls normally.
Mistakes to avoid
- Setting it with the SPOUT still plugged in.
- Forgetting to plug the SPOUT back in (code 18).
- Reading the ATDC side of the marks.
- Checking it before the engine is fully warm.
- Using a remote starter.
- Letting the timing light cord near the fan or belt.
Done check
- SPOUT connector is plugged back in.
- With the SPOUT in, the timing advances past the base setting.
- Distributor hold-down bolt is tight, and the timing didn't move.
- Idles smoothly at normal temperature. No check engine light.
- No pinging (spark knock) on a test drive.
